Preliminary Research Shows CBD May Help to Fight COVID-19

CBD may have just gotten better.

Aside from being a well-know anti-inflammatory, pain-reliever, sleep aid, anxiety-reducer, and a successful manager of intractable epilepsy, some Canadian chemists believe cannabis, especially some extracts from high-CBD strains, may be able to help fight COVID-19.

Now that laws have finally been loosened, scientists are finally able to put cannabis to the test — or rather, a lot of tests. To find out what this cannabinoid-rich plant can do.

For years, Canadian researchers Olga and Igor Kovalchuck have been creating and testing new cannabis strains. Their ganja genetics pursuit in the lab originally specialized in cannabis strains that could combat global human health concerns like cancer and inflammation. But when the coronavirus crisis went down, these reefer researchers saw a crossover between their work and what might be needed to fight COVID-19. A study containing their promising preliminary research, can be found in the medical journal Preprints.

Why Study CBD to Fight the Coronavirus?

First, a quick look to help us understand how SARS-CoV2 works. Don’t worry, I’ll keep it simple.

SARS-CoV2 is the virus (coronavirus) that causes the COVID-19 disease or coronavirus disease, similar to how HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. A person can have the virus without developing the disease.

The Gateway Tissue Is in the Lungs

ACE2 is an enzyme that exists in high levels in your lung tissue (as well as in oral and nasal mucosa, kidney, testes, and the gastrointestinal tract). ACE2 is the receptor that SARS-CoV2 uses to get into your system. It’s the gateway.

SARS-CoV2 (coronavirus) is spread through respiratory droplets, which gives it access to your lungs. The virus is literally made to latch on to ACE2 receptors. And, unfortunately for us, it has a high binding capacity, 10-20 times more than original SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

With this information, it’s easily deduced that probably the best and simplest way to prevent COVID-19 is to deny the virus access to those ACE2 receptors.

Scientists have observed that cannabis, especially strains high in the cannabinoid CBD, can decrease gene expression (possibly reduce the production of ACE2) and inflammation and possesses anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties.

So why not try to use it to help stop the coronavirus?

The Path from Theory to Proof

The Kovalchucks have been a prolific pair in the lab. According to their study’s abstract,

“Working under the Health Canada research license, we have developed over 800 new Cannabis sativa lines and extracts and hypothesized that high-CBD C. sativa extracts may be used to modulate ACE2 expression in COVID-19 target tissues.”

Umm, over 800 strains? Wow.

After looking at the research performed by their fellow scientists with regard to cannabis and COVID-19, and through their own rigorous testing, they were able to narrow down 13 high-CBD cannabis strain extracts “that modulate ACE2 gene expression and ACE2 protein levels.”

Furthermore, these specific CBD strains show promise in their potential to prevent the virus from being able to spread after it’s already entered your system.

The study’s research was carried out on 3D human tissue models, and while these results have successfully and crucially established a basis for the possible use of CBD extract to prevent and fight the COVID-19 disease, it remains clinically untested on humans, and thus remains a theory in need of larger-scale studies that prove it.

But you can bet the Kovalchucks and their colleagues are going to continue down that path that hopefully leads up to the door we can may one day be able to slam on the threats of coronavirus and COVID-19.

It’s not Surprising That CBD Could Help

We already know that people use CBD for lots of reasons that help support the immune system. Getting plenty of rest, reducing mental and physical stress, and a healthy diet are just some of the ways it can help your immune health.

But did you know that CBD and other cannabinoids have been used in studies in which they proved potent against various strains of bacteria like staphylococcus, streptococcus, and MRSA. This is extremely significant considering the global problem of antibiotic resistance.
